MenB Vaccination Service

A new community pharmacy vaccination service to provide a one-off Meningococcal B (MenB) Vaccination Service was announced on 12th June 2026.

This will be a new Advanced Service which is targeted at protecting young people heading to universities or residential further education settings ahead of the start of term in autumn 2026.

Negotiations about the service with NHSE are currently underway and details will be published by Community Pharmacy England once concluded.

When Will Vaccinations be Offered?

The programme will begin from 20th July 2026, giving students sufficient time to complete the recommended two-dose vaccination course before the start of the autumn term, when cases typically begin to increase.

  • Dose 1: Available from 20th July and ends for first doses on 31st December 2026.
  • Dose 2: At least 28 days later and ideally before term starts in September (ends 31st March 2027 for second doses).

Giving the vaccination in July and August is advised to optimise protection ahead of the start of term given the potential for close mixing with new people at this time.

Who is Eligible?

The service will be available to:

  • All Year 13 students (born between 1st September 2007 and 31st August 2008).
  • Under-25s entering university or residential further education for the first time.
  • International students under 25 years old entering their first year of university.

Confirmation of Eligibility

Young people eligible by age will be identified by date of birth as documented in their clinical records. To be eligible, they will need to fall within the relevant cohort by date of birth (born between 1st September 2007 and 31st August 2008).

To be eligible as Higher Education/Residential Further Education (HERFE) entrants, they will need to fall within the relevant age group by date of birth (those born on or after 21st July 2001), AND present acceptable evidence at their vaccination appointment that they are due to attend HERFE for the first time in the academic year 2026/2027, as follows:

  • Official email confirmation of their offer of a place at their chosen university or college from either the higher education (HE) institution (usually a .ac.uk email address) or the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS).
  • A letter (hard copy or email) confirming they have received an offer of a place for the 2026/2027 academic year at their chosen university or college.
  • Screenshot of their offer of a place at their chosen university or college from the UCAS Hub.

Accessing Vaccination

Year 13 students will receive an invitation to book vaccinations via the National Booking Service (NBS).

Those eligible as HERFE entrants will be able to use the NHS website to identify a pharmacy to which to self-refer.
