Minor Ailments (including Head Lice)

Pharmacies commissioned to provide a minor ailments service give advice and support to people on the management of minor ailments, including where necessary, the supply of medicines (free of charge to those exempt from prescription charges) for the treatment of the minor ailment, for those people who would have otherwise gone to their GP for a prescription.

If you are interested in providing these services in your pharmacy please click here for information on what you need to do.

A minor ailment service is commissioned in the following areas:

  • Calderdale
  • Kirklees
  • Leeds

Some areas also commission a standalone Head Lice service, while in other areas the treatment of head lice is incorporated into a minor ailment service.  Standalone head lice services are commissioned by:

  • Calderdale
  • Kirklees

Minor ailments services do not replace OTC purchase of medication.  Those customers who usually manage their own minor ailments through self-care and purchase of OTC medication should continue to self-manage and treat their minor ailments as per essential service 6, self-care.
